Positive academic reviews of the Bioinformatics Ph.D. proposal

UCLA seems to be well on its way towards approval of the proposed Bioinformatics Ph.D., based on the latest feedback from FEC and CDP.
On April 6, 2007 the UCLA Faculty Executive Committee voted unanimously to approve our bioinformatics IDP proposal.  The only concerns were whether we will be able to recruit our target number of students given the competition, and our focus on students who have a strong undergraduate training in bioinformatics, and thus whether the program might end up being too small.

On May 22, the Graduate Council Committee on Degree Programs returned a favorable verdict on the Bioinformatics IDP proposal as forwarded to them by FEC.  Their main comments were
  • that the IDP should provide by-laws for how it will be run;
  • that the staff support level may be too low if the program grows or receives a large volume of applications;
  • that some kind of industry internships might be a valuable addition.
The current status is that we are assembling the required by-laws, and will send a response to CDP, to move the IDP proposal to the next step in the approval process.
